Physical Education

Intent

Through our school vision of “safe, healthy bodies” and positive experiences in Physical Education, we want to encourage our pupils to lead healthy, active lives.

We want our pupils to develop a sense of fair play and a positive sporting attitude. They will enjoy sporting activities, developing resilience and perseverance as they do so.

Physical Education in the Early Years

Early Years Physical Education (PE) curriculum focuses on developing skills in coordination, control, and movement. Children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learn through free or lightly structured activities that take place both indoors and outdoors.

Some examples of what children learn in early years PE include:

  • Gross motor skills: Children develop these through activities like jumping, hopping, skipping, climbing, and running. They also play with toys that pedal or push and pull.
  • Fine motor skills: Children develop these through activities like using tweezers, playdough, puzzles, and stringing beads.
  • Negotiation and cooperation: Teachers introduce words like "share", "wait", "take turns", "before", and "after".
  • Self-regulation: Children learn to manage themselves, their impulses, their emotions and their movements.
  • Building relationships: Children learn to build relationships with others and play cooperatively.

Physical Education in Key Stage 1

Pupils will develop fundamental movement skills, becoming increasingly competent and confident. They will access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, both individually and with others.

They will be able to engage in competitive (against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils will be taught to:

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
  • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
  • perform dances using simple movement patterns.

The National Curriculum

Our Physical Education programme is based on the National Curriculum expectations for Infant Schools. This is further supported by the Association of Physical Education (AfPE).

Enrichment

Through our affiliation with the Gloucester School Sports Network we take part in a year round calendar of events. These include both participation opportunities, such as multi skill festivals and dance shows, to competition experiences in activities such as bench ball, gymnastics, athletics and bean bag rounders.

We ensure that every single pupil has the opportunity to represent their school and feel part of the wider Gloucester schools community.
